Monarch Wings

8×8 ft.

The artist created this piece to call attention to the plight of not only Monarch butterflies, but also the decline in pollinators in our environment. It was originally designed to be a companion piece to guide visitors of the Dutchess County Fair (Rhinebeck, NY) to the exhibit on Monarch butterflies. Complex shading and carrying of several yarn colors together are techniques used throughout the piece. Wool, acrylic, polyester, and cotton yarns were all utilized in the creation of the wings. Pieces are sewn to black felt wing silhouettes, then sewn onto a large backing for hanging. This piece is designed for people to stand in front of and take pictures.
